Honda to Retain Odyssey Name for New Minivan; Export/Import Plans Announced

    TORRANCE, Calif., May 20 /PRNewswire/ -- The all-new 1999 Honda minivan
will retain the Odyssey name when it goes on sale in North America this fall,
American Honda Motor Co., Inc. confirmed today.
The announcement was one of several made during the release of 1998 fiscal
year results Wednesday in Japan (3:30 A.M. EST) by Honda Motor Co., Ltd.
Other announcements affecting North American operations included:

    * The current Odyssey, which is imported from Japan, will be replaced in
North America by the all-new, much larger model, beginning with the '99 model
year. The North American-market Odyssey will be made on a new assembly line
currently under construction at Honda of Canada Mfg., Inc. in Alliston,
Ontario;
    * The all-new Acura TL luxury performance sedan, which goes into
production this fall at Honda of America Mfg. Inc.'s Marysville (Ohio)
Assembly Plant, will also be exported to Japan, where it will be sold as the
Inspire and Saber. Marysville will be the sole source of TL, Inspire and Saber
production;
    * In an effort to meet continued strong consumer demand in North America
for the new Accord, Honda's plant in Sayama, Japan, will begin production of
Accord sedans for export to the U.S. beginning with the '99 model year. Some
of this production will be exported to distributors in Asia and the Middle
East that also sell the larger North American-market Accord models;
    * Overall 1999 fiscal year (April 1, 1998 - March 31, 1999) imports from
Japan to the U.S. will remain consistent with '98 levels at about 240,000.

"These moves will help us better meet consumer demand and balance
production capabilities around the world," said Tom Elliott, American Honda
executive vice president. "While our import numbers will remain at the same
level as last year, our exports will actually increase slightly."
Honda was the leading North American car exporter during 1997 with about
58,000 exports. Exports are expected to be about 60,000 in 1998.
The all-new North American-built Odyssey will be the largest vehicle ever
made by Honda and will be as big and more powerful than any minivan on the
market. The Acura TL is the second Acura model (following the Acura CL) to be
designed, engineered and manufactured in North America.

SSX info from Europe

from an anonymous source:
The latest news direct from Honda is that the SSX will have its world debut
at Honda's 50th birthday celebrations; the car will not be on sale anywhere
until 1999. I could not get any conformation of engine type to be used, Mr
Suzuki (European head of R+D) would only smile at the suggestion of the
infamous V5 engine...

Honda F1 info

Thanks to Chris Ta:
I was reading a magazine in Singapore and found this little tidbit...

Honda Looking At F1 Again
More than five years after it was last involved in Formula One racing as an
engine supplier, Honda recently announced that it will return to the F1
tracks as a fully comprehensive team, developing and manufacturing its own
cars and engines for racing. This decision was announced last month by the
Japanese manufacturer, although the exact year of re-entry into the scene
has yet to be confirmed. Sources indicate that it could be as soon as the
year 2000.
It's not the first time Honda will be designing its own F1 cars – from 1964
to 1968, a Honda team participated in 35 F1 races, winning two.

Honda News in 6.98 Automobile Magazine

The Prancing H

Honda is coming back to Formula racing. Moreover, Honda
will build both the engine and the car and then will go racing
with its own team. Ferrari has chosen this difficult path to
F1 success, a challenge that was too much for BMW, Mercedes-Benz,
Peugeot, and Renault, all of which delegate team management and
chassis design to specialist firms.
Like Ferrari, Honda has always taken a fierce pride in its
ability to do it all. There's also a great deal of Japanese
national pride at stake here. Honda's brilliant success as a
Formula 1 engine builder from 1983 to 1992, when it won 69 out
of 199 races, helped make Japan crazy for F1 racing, and there's
enormous enthusiasm for an all-Japanese effort.
Engineers at Honda R&D built and F1 test car several years ago
and have agitated for an all-Honda racing effort like the company's
F1 program from 1964 to 1968. Now management has relented.
Company president Nobuhiko Kawamoto, who was once a Honda racing
mechanic with the Brabham F2 team in teh 1960s, says his company
hopes to create a new generation of racing-educated engineers who
can maintain the company's inventive spirit.
It's expected the all-Honda race team will be on the track for
the 2000 season. As a first step, though, we hear that Honda will
build an engine for the recently reorganized Tyrrell F1 team, which
has been purchased by British American Tobacco. A Tyrell-Honda on
Bridgestone tires will be used for testing during 1999. Once Honda's
own team appears, it's likely that CART champion drivers Alex Zanardi
and Gil de Ferran will be in the cars.

Sneak Preview 2000

(pg 67)
Honda SSX
The new Honda sports car will be the star of Honda's fiftieth-
birthday celebration in September before it goes on sale in the first
quarter of 1999. Compared with the Mazda Miata and the Mercedes-Benz
SLK, the SSX is being set up as a raw, purebred roadster, more of a
racing car for the road -- think Caterham Super Seven meets Acura
Integra Type R. One key engineer said the 200-bhp, 2.0-liter four-
cylinder VTEC engine is "simply fantastic." Taking the 1995 Tokyo
show car as a template, the SSX will retain its lightweight aluminum
two-seat body, brand-new rear-wheel-drive chassis, 50/50 weight
distribution, double-wishbone suspension, and six-speed manual, but
it will have different front sheetmetal because the show car's headlamps
were too low. Reports of a V-5 engine later in its life cycle appear
unlikel: A 2.5-liter V-6 is far more probable. One thing that hasn't
made it from show car to production is the way-out cabin, which has been
drastically toned down.

Honda's Return to F1

From an anonymous source:
I'm unsure if Honda will return to F1 with a works team. I know for a
fact they are in negotiations with Jordan to buy them out (inside info).
Honda's initial offers have been under what Jordan wanted, but Jordan
are very keen to sell. It was initially going to be Jordan renaming the
team for 99 - maybe with an announcement from the 98 British GP.
However, it now looks likely that the name Jordan will remain for the
next couple of years, probably with a name change in 2000. Of course
much depends on how much Honda will pay, and how well Jordan start doing
in the GPs. I think there is a very strong chance this will happen and
be headline news in the summer.

SUVs giving way to FR sedans??

Thanks to Wil McQueen:
From Automobile Magazine, May 1998 issue, "FOB" segment:

What will be the Next Big Thing after sport-utes?
Japanese carmakers think they know.

Honda has approved a plan to produce a brand-new, rear-wheel-drive compact
sport sedan, using the platform of its upcoming SSM roadster. Due in 1999,
Honda's offering will come with 2.0 litre four cylinder power and, it is rumoured,
a 2.5 litre V6. this would follow Toyota's soon-to-be-released NC250 and Lexus
IS200 rear-wheel-drive sport sedans. Nissan, too, ill ante up with a 2.0 litre rear-
wheel-drive sport sedan of its own. Once the SUV craze subsides, Japanese
automakers expect rear-wheel-drive sport sedans to be the Next Big Thing in their
home market.
I'd be willing to bet a fair number of people in other markets (such as North America) would pounce on an FR Honda sport sedan. I know I'm ready to write a check tomorrow... jkp

Some CR-X info from Japan, via Ireland

Thanks to Philip T.
I have a contact in Japan who helps me get part numbers and
other information about my 1990 CRX SiR which I imported from Japan to
Ireland last year. I couldn't wait to find out the information about the
new CRX and if they were only going to offer the hybrid engine so I
asked him. His reply surprised me considering that the information so
far showed the CRX at about 90% sure.
Well here is his reply to my mail (His English is not 100% but it is
good enough):-
________________________________________________________________

Hello Philip.
Every thing is good, how about you?

About new CRX.
Unfortunately we don't have new CRX plan now.
Because we Honda put a max power into new generation vehicle now.
For example hybrid engine, zero emission powers Unit..

And new generation vehicle is cold "WB0" and hybrid engine is only power
unit for "WB0" now. It will debut in end of 1999.

But don't worry. We have another plan in next CIVIC.
I heard there is new sports type 3door (like CR-X) in civic series and it
will make in UK. Because it is only for Europe.

Integra and Civic Type Rs reviewed in UK's Car magazine

Some Selected Quotes:
"No European car, irrespective of price, matches the sheer intensity of the Integra Type-R."
"There will be an Accord Type-R for Europe this autumn, with over 200bhp."
Is this your car?
I snapped this Euro Type R in Ipswitch, England
today. Apologies to the owner

And some not so kind words for the Civic Type R...
"So why then, is the Civic Type-R so awful? Driven on a circuit in Japan, the CT-R was alive, pointy and real fun, resembling a yet friskier Integra. But in Britain, this car sucks."
In the Civic's defense, I believe Car tested the N1 version of the Civic Type R, which is intended for people who will take the car and immediately modify it for racing. Thus, no titanium shift knob, recaro seats, drilled pedals, etc...
"The Civic Type-R feels like it was rushed out to satisfy a faddish micro-market in greater Tokyo. Which is stupid."
Ouch, not too kind...

Reginald's Racing Update

"Honda Planning F1 Return as Works Team" (from On Track)

Honda's expected return to Formula 1 will apparently come as a complete works
presence rather than merely as an engine supplier. While it is no secret that
Honda has been deliberating a return, this year represents the company's 50th
anniversary, and an announcement is widely anticipated.

Honda, which helped Williams and McLaren to five world championships between
1987 and 1991, built a test hack to evaluate engine developments as long as
four years ago and has constantly been in touch with F1 evolution through its
closely associated Mugen company, which this year powers the Jordan cars. But
news that it is considering entering chassis as well has surprised many.

It has even been suggested that the plans are merely a ruse to deflect
attention from a secret plan to supply the new British American Racing team.
The theory is that Reynard has given Honda two CART titles in the US and that
an association might guarantee Jacques Villeneuve's signature for the new
initiative of Reynard and Craig Pollock, Villeneuve's former manager, in 1999.

Pollock, however, seems to discount such suggestions. "I think Honda, as with
any other particular manufacturer that has been in F1 for many years, would
probably be very clever to look at coming as a works team," he says.

Still, Pollock refuses to dismiss the possibility of a BAR association. "I'd
never rule it out," he says. "We certainly hope that Honda would look at us
as a strong possibility."

Benetton is another team regularly linked with the Japanese manufacturer.
With Williams inking a deal for BMW engines for the year 2000, Benetton is the
only top-four team in Formula 1 without a major manufacturer contract in
place. Clearly, team chief David Richards, who has Honda links, would be
interested in a collaboration. "I'd be inclined to suggest that it wouldn't
be an awfully good idea for them to do the chassis as well," he says, "but
they are one of the few motor manufacturers in the world who could consider
that as an option, having done it before and having such a pedigree. But
personally I wouldn't think it was the right thing to do."

Jordan Technical Director Gary Anderson, meanwhile, believes a full works
effort will happen. "I think it's true," he says. "There's no smoke without
fire, and I've been over there a few times and wouldn't be surprised. I know
they'd love to do it."

Mugen boss Hirotoshi Honda, the son of the company's founder, feigned lack of
knowledge of the Honda company's plans while in Melbourne for the Australian
Grand Prix. "They are not decided finally, but they will come back, I am
sure," he said. "In their heads, the engineers are already preparing, but
there is no announcement as to when and how."

(here's another article along the same lines, but more surprising on the
driver front)

"Honda's Formula 1 Plans" (from F1 News) The Honda Motor Company is expected to announce that it is about to launch a major Grand Prix campaign which will be ready in time for the 1999 season. Although it is yet to be officially confirmed, we believe that Honda has settled on a two-pronged attack, with a supply of V10 engines for British American Racing and for a completely new Honda F1 team, which will build its own cars in Japan and will be run by former Grand Prix driver, Satoru Nakajima. We believe that the driver line-up will include Jacques Villeneuve and Toranosuke Takagi (current Tyrell-Ford driver) in the Honda-Hondas and CART champion Alessandro Zanardi driving for British American Racing alongside Frenchman Jean-Christophe Boullion (ex-Williams test driver). While the idea of a new team building a completely new team from nothing in the space of a few months may seem a ludicrous concept, we understand that Honda has been working quietly on chassis development at its R&D centre in Wako for some years, while Mugen has been developing the Honda V10 engine. Honda's return to F1 comes as no great surprise because the philosophy of progress through competition is part of the company's corporate culture. Honda has always been run by racers and its President, Nobuhiko Kawamoto remains convinced that motor racing is good for training engineers, for nurturing innovation, and for motivating the company. The decision to supply BAR as well is a good way for the company to hedge its bets in case there are problems with the Honda-Honda. It should be remembered however that BAR's Managing Director, Craig Pollock has very strong Honda connections, having worked in Europe for the Interhoba Group (owned by Soichiro's close friend) before he began to work as Jacques Villeneuve's manager. There are also strong Honda links with Reynard Racing Cars, the two companies working together with great success in the US, notably with Target/Chip Ganassi and Team KOOL Green. Honda pulled out of Formula 1 at the end of 1992 blaming the economic recession for the decision. In fact it suited the company to withdraw because it had dominated Grand Prix racing to such an extent that there was little to be gained from continuing and almost immediately a secret Honda-Honda F1 car was spotted testing at the Tochigi circuit in Japan. The company said the car had been put together by Honda engineers in their spare time. Eleven months later a car called the RC101B was given a run at Suzuka, with Satoru Nakajima driving. Honda admitted at the time that the RC100 and RC101 have been built but had both been destroyed in crash-testing. After 1994 nothing was heard of the project and it was assumed that Honda decided that entering F1 with its own team was too risky. The initial Honda F1 effort in the 1960's - on which Kawamoto worked - was not a great success, with the team racing Lola-built cars after its own failed to be competitive. Honda seems to have learned from its mistakes and seems to have been testing considerably with its own chassis. We hear that a new Honda-Honda was built last year for some quiet testing. We understand that there were some problems with composite delamination. It will be interesting to see what happens with the deal between Jordan GP and Mugen Honda which was agreed in August last year. Jordan announced that it had an exclusive deal for 1998 and 1999, but it may well be that Mugen - which is run by Hirotoshi Honda, the son of Soichiro - will continue in F1 alongside the main Honda company. Nakajima is, of course, the most obvious man to run the team. He was the first regular Grand Prix driver from Japan and remains the best-known and most popular of all motor racing figures in Japan. He has been linked to Honda for most of his career. Some rival team bosses in the F1 paddock doubt that Honda can simply build its own chassis in Tokyo and then arrive in F1 and expect to win without expert assistance from the motor racing industry in England. One rumour we heard in Melbourne was that Harvey Postlethwaite and Mike Gascoyne, who have built a very promising car for Tyrell this year, might be employed by Honda to help advise on the planned car. Such a partnership would overcome many of the doubts in the paddock as they would bring proven F1 design and production expertise and considerable experience to the project from the start. With modern levels of global communication there is no reason that building a car in Japan should be any different from building one in Switzerland or in Italy. It is virtually certain, however, that there would have to be a European base for the Honda-Honda operation, probably not far from the old Honda F1 facility at Langley in Buckinghamshire.

CL Type R?!?

From Matt Stanik:
Tuesday 4/14 I spotted a white Acura 3.0cl Type-R! while
driving to work in the Chicago area.

The car was wearing dealer plates and custom low profile
wheels on an obviously lowered suspension. It was all white
with a mid-height spoiler and the red Type-R logo on the back
sides. It was also badged 3.0CL. Muffler was a standard
CL looking type device.

When traffic stopped on the expressway, I rolled down
my window and asked the driver what motor was in the car.
He yelled back "Three-liter" (was hoping for more details)
and he also mentioned that the car was a proto and not
yet for sale.

I might add that it looked MUCH better than the standard CL.
My best guess is that Matt spotted a dealer Type R appearance package for the CL. The CL is due to be replaced this fall, and it's been rumoured to be getting a high(er) output version of the 3.0L and possibly being badged with the Type R logos. I personally hope Acura doesn't dilute the Type R image with a half-assed attempt at a sport coupe, like I think the CL Type R would probably be (remember, it's not sold anywhere outside of North America). And as far as I know, there are no manual gearboxes in the works, either... jkp

Honda Type R/Type S for Europe

from an anonymous source:
Further to your latest news item there has been no official confirmation of
the Prelude Type R for the UK or Europe, at the moment it does not exist
there are no rumours that I know of, the only rumour is that we will
receive a Type S (200 bhp) with the ATTS system (We don't have ATTS as yet)
maybe this will be the Type R ??.

The Accord R will be launched along with the rest of the Euro Accord in
September / October with a 200bhp motor. It will probably be fitted with a
touring car style spoiler kit, it's heavily guarded at the moment. I have
seen basic models but the "R" is really kept under wraps.

Honda Type R information from 4.13 Autoweek

Thanks to Neal McDaniel

I would take this information with a grain of salt - I find it highly improbable that Honda would stuff the B18C Spec R motor into the Civic for our consumption. The reasons are numerous, but primarily production capacity is quite limited on the hand tuned and ported motors, and perhaps more importantly, the consequences to Integra Type R sales in the US marketplace are not likely to be good. On the other hand, American Honda went to a lot of trouble in federalizing the Type R Integra for US consumption, so maybe they feel they can recoup some of the costs. Also, a 195 hp Civic would likely be the quickest Honda in the US, next to the NSX. The hot Civic that is destined for the US will not be sold as a Type R here, for Acura would like to retain exclusivity of the Type R badge. We will be getting an Si-R with the B16A motor, probably still producing 160bhp as it did in the del Sol VTEC, certainly no more than 170hp. It will come in coupe form only, and feature 15" alloy wheels, 4 wheel disks, and maybe the 5 lug hubs from the Integra and Civic Type Rs.

SSX and Type R info in 5/98 Road & Track

Thanks to Huy D. Vu
From Road & Track's Japanese correspondent, Jack Yamaguchi
May 1998

Honda reveals its long-awaited SS-X roadster at the company's 50th anniversary this fall, and it hits the market in the spring of 1999. A V-5 is out, but a version of the Accord's V-6, displacing 2.5 litres is a possibility. The main power unit is a new-from-the-oilpan-up VTEC twincam 16-valve 2.0-liter inline-4 that turns the right way (Honda fours typically revolve in the other direction). Prototype powertrains are now being evaluated in a number of engineering mules, which include several shortened coupe bodies converted to rear-drive configuration. A likely feature is Formula-1 type ultra-quick steering. Steer with your wrists and shift with your fingers, so to speak.

Japan already has the 1998-spec Type-R Integra with numerous improvements, including hand polished ports, revised gear ratios, 5 bolt alloy wheels and gas-discharge headlamps. Likely to follow the R-movement will be a Japanese Accord version, a smaller car than the US model.

Info on the new Honda minivan

Thanks to Neal McDaniel
NEW YORK, April 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Honda took the wraps off an all-new
minivan here today that will set new standards in the class when it goes on
sale this fall. The yet unnamed 1999 model was unveiled at a press conference
prior to the opening of the New York Auto Show.
"We believe the new Honda minivan will out-perform, provide more room,
more utility, more versatility, more safety features and be more
environmentally friendly than anything else currently on the market," said
Dick Colliver, Honda executive vice president. "It will also feature the
traits Honda has become known for, dependability, quality construction and
reliability."
With an overall length of more than 200 inches and height of more than
68 inches, the aggressively styled Honda minivan is as large as any competitor
and the largest Honda ever made. It will have the most powerful V6 engine in
the class and meet California's stringent low emission vehicle (LEV) standard
for light trucks.
The Honda minivan will ride on 16-inch tires with front and rear tracks
more than two inches wider than any competitor. Anti-lock brakes are standard.
A fully independent suspension completes the ride and handling package.
Both LX and EX trim versions of the new minivan will be available, both
with seating for seven.
The Honda minivan will feature dual sliding doors and the EX version will
have dual power sliding doors, a minivan first. The power doors can be opened
or closed individually or simultaneously, using a dashboard control, keyless
remote, or by pulling on the door handle. The doors also have a touch
sensitive safety rebound feature should they encounter resistance while
closing. Both doors also will operate manually.
The interior of the Honda minivan sets new standards for comfort, safety,
versatility and utility. Individual lighting and air conditioning controls are
included. A central control allows the driver to turn off the lights or adjust
the air conditioning of a napping passenger.
All seven seats have headrests and three-point seat belts, including the
center of the third-row bench seat, a minivan first. The "magic" third row
seat folds completely into the floor for convenient storage. In addition, the
unique second row seats can be used as separate captain chairs, or converted
into a bench seat.
"Our research indicates people prefer captain chairs in the middle row
except when they have a child safety seat on board," Colliver noted. "Then
they want a bench seat so the child's seat can be located between the two
front seats for easy access.
"Honda engineers solved this problem by developing the first convertible
second row seating. The seats can be positioned as captain chairs, or moved
together to form a bench seat."
The minivan also boasts outstanding utility, with room for 4x8 sheets of
plywood to lay flat on the floor or on top of the folded seats.
A long list of standard equipment includes a 4-speed electronically
controlled automatic transmission, dual front and rear air conditioning,
cruise control, power windows and power mirrors, power flip-out rear windows
and privacy glass.
The new Honda minivan will be built on a second assembly line currently
under construction at Honda of Canada Manufacturing in Alliston, Ontario,
which is near Toronto. 1999 HONDA MINIVAN HIGHLIGHTS*

Some Euro-market Honda news

From Mirko Arnold
My name is Mirko Arnold, I´m from Germany (how you will see) and I hope
to have some needful information, especially for the european readers of
your page.
Our official news said that Honda would return into F1 with an own car,
that means own engine and own chassis. But it won´t be until 2000/2001.
Information about new models are very unsure. The dealers I know say,
the Accord Type R will have up to 250 (!) bhp and a Type R version of
the Civic will come to Europe, possibly until fall 1998.

4.3.98

Some info on various upcoming Hondas

from an anonymous source
Have received much info today related to time frames of new model
intros. US version of Civic Type R has been confirmed for release by
late summer '98. SSX will be released in the US June '99 as 2000MY.
SSX will have a total production of 10,000 units over 2 MYs. 250HP
6-speed with MSRP of $34,900. SSX will be sold by Honda dealers. New
minivan will have "cargo" version. Full sized SUV on schedule for Fall
'99 intro. Full sized SUV to (be) produced in Ontario with new minivan.
Minivan production will be limited to 60,000 units per year. CRV
production level going up to 100,000 units per year.
Just a quick note - our sources indicate that the upcoming hot Civic model will not be a Type R, but rather an Si-R, with a B16A (160hp DOHC VTEC 1.6L) motor, and it will come in coupe form only (not hatchback). jkp

JV-X/CRX blurb in 3.20 Autoweek

thanks to Neal McDaniel
CRX returns? It won't be called the CRX and it won't be particularly sporty, but a car Honda calls the CRX successor is coming to America in less than two years. The body is a conservative version of the racy J-VX concept car shown at Tokyo (see pg. 19). Reports have it based off the Civic hatchback, not the smaller, B-segment Honda Logo that Honda chief Nobuhiko Kawamoto said would carry the J-VX powertrain in Europe.

As if you could, forget the pocket-rocket qualities from the original CRX. Like the ultra-efficient CRX HF, this car's goal is, yawn, efficiency. It is powered by a version of the Integrated Motor Assist hybrid powerplant shown in the J-VX. In Japan, the IMA is mated to a 1.0-liter, three-cylinder VTEC engine; U.S. Cars probably will get a more conventional electric motor mate, rather than the IMA. Plans call for it to be the car's only drivetrain. The hybrid makes about the same 102 hp of Honda's last 1.5-liter four, but should achieve the mythic 80 mpg that our federal government and the governments of Europe seek.

Honda also touts the engine as lowering carbon dioxide emissions, and therefore, playing a role in the reduction of greenhouse gasses. It's an admirable, significant goal, but not one to set a racer's heart ablaze.

Expect few J-VX hatchbacks at first. All it takes to make them is to drop the hybrid drivetrain into the car on the Civic assembly line and, like those snack foods, if demand exists, Honda can make more.

Still, with gasoline a buck a gallon, griped one cynical Honda insider who remembers the CRX, "Who wants an 80-mpg car? Nobody."

Accord R and SSX Information

From anonymous

Our sources indicate that there will indeed be an Accord R for Europe. It is planned to launch in October along with the rest of the new European Accord range. They are currently under heavily disguised testing. Cars are transported wearing paper covers.

The SSX is currently being tested with a 4 cylinder engine, but it's not a current production engine.

R Models

From UK's Auto Car Magazine

"Honda is planning a new wave of R models hot on the heels of the recently launched Integra R. First to hit the streets will be the Type-R Accord, on sale in October with the rest of the new Accord range, the Accord R will
cost about £22,000, and feature a 220 bhp four cylinder 2.2 VTEC engine. After the stripped out approach on the Integra, the Accord R is unlikely to feature equipment such as Air con in the quest of weight reductions. Within
six months, the Accord will be joined by a Prelude R, powered by the same 2.2 engine. Honda hopes to extract up to 250 bhp for the Prelude, to distance it from the Accord. A Civic R is available in Japan, but Honda won't import the car to Europe, as emission regulations reduce the power of its 1.6 engine to around 180 bhp, just 13bhp more than the current VTI."

Honda F1 News

From Car and Driver

Car and Driver Magazine reports that Honda may return to F1 with its own car built from the ground up. DOME Racing of Kyoto has built a mock up of a Honda chassis, complying with the '98 F1 regulations. After a year of testing, it should be ready by the year 2000. Rumored driver is Juichi Wakisaka, who is a test driver for Jordan. See DOME's web site for more information.

Reginald's Racing Update

From Reginald Legaspi

"SCHUI II SURGES AHEAD" (from Jordan GP press release)

The Benson and Hedges Jordan team packed up to go to Australia with high hopes after Ralf Schumacher concluded a three-day test at Silverstone by putting in the fastest lap of the week (1.26.51). Other teams running at the time were
Arrows and Benetton.

The team have had a very productive week overall, with both Ralf and Damon putting in race distances and checking set-ups for the first race of the season in Melbourne. On Wednesday (2/25), the drivers carried out shakedowns of two new chassis, one of which will become the T-car in Australia and the other a test car.

We also received an unexpected visit from an ex-employee during a practice pit stop. Although the boys were waiting for Ralf to come in, Giancarlo Fisichella had a brainstorm, passed his Benetton garage and lined up beautifully for a pit stop with his former team!

Thursday morning (2/26) saw the departure of three Jordan Mugen-Honda 198s and 18 tonnes of equipment by air freight to Australia. The cars will be reassembled on Wednesday 4th March in Melbourne ready for the start of the
Formula 1 World Championship on the 8th.

"HONDA RACING BITS" (compiled by Reginald Legaspi)

Tasman Motorsports has officially confirmed that they will initially field a single entry in the 1998 CART season with 1997 Indy Lights champ Tony Kanaan. Tasman wanted to field a two-car team, though Honda would only supply one
engine program. The dispute was settled and Tasman will field a second car in the latter part of the season for an American driver, supposedly to establish more Americans in CART. Parker Johnstone perhaps?

Jordan GP have secured an fuel and oil supplier with Spanish company Repsol. Repsol has ties with Jordan test driver Pedro de la Rosa. Former supplier Total moved to Prost along with the Peugeot engine deal.

"F1 1998" (by Reginald Legaspi)

The 1998 season will bring about two of the biggest, and most controversial rules changes to be seen in modern Formula 1. In an effort to increase closer racing and more overtaking maneuvers, the FIA has reduced the width of a Grand Prix car from 2 metres down to 1.8 metres (width of an F3 car!). The cars will also run grooved tires instead of slicks. The front tires will have three circumferential grooves while the wider rear tires will have four. The theory is that with less mechanical grip and a smaller car, drivers will be able to make more racing passes, in turn making it more appealing to TV viewers.

198sil~1.jpg (27221 bytes)

show.jpg (59870 bytes)

198sil~2.jpg (27696 bytes)

All the teams except Ferrari have voiced displeasure with the new rules. The most vocal critic is '95 CART/'97 F1 champ Jacques Villeneuve, who was almost penalized for calling the new rules "shit." Villeneuve, along with some other drivers, felt that the racing will not be improved and that stopping distances in the case of an accident will increase because of the reduced contact patches of the tires. Interestingly, double-champ Michael Schumacher (Ralf's
older brother) supports the new rules.

With the 1998 F1 season less than a week away, we can see whether or not the new rules will work. In the meantime, here are the specs for the Jordan Mugen-Honda 198...

"Jordan Mugen-Honda 198 Technical Specification" (from Jordan GP)

"Jordan Mugen Honda 198"

The Jordan Mugen-Honda 198, although born from the same family as the Jordan cars of previous years, has a significantly different chassis structure due to the regulation changes imposed on the 1998 Formula One cars. The overall look of the width of the car has narrowed from 2 metres to 1.8 metres. The regulation changes have forced the team to look at the components of the car in detail and make several design progressions. Changes have been made to the side pods in order to withstand the increased loads of the revised FIA side impact test.

The car has a revised six speed gear box, from seven speeds in 1997, mainly to alter the weight distribution. In addition, the torque curve characteristic of the Mugen-Honda engine means the seventh gear is not required.

Work on the design of the car began in July 1997, and once the engine deal with Mugen-Honda was confirmed, more detailed design work began. Pedal alterations had to be made to accommodate Damon's size 11 feet.

The new Jordan Grand Prix wind tunnel, located at Brackley, 5 miles away from the Silverstone factory, has played an important role in developing the aerodynamics of the Jordan Mugen-Honda 198. The team has been using the wind
tunnel since July for five days ever other week, spending the week off analysing data back at the factory.

The interim car run during the winter months played an important role in highlighting potential problems which could be amended in the design of the Jordan Mugen-Honda 198.

Mechanically, changes have been made to the suspension. The layout has been changed to compensate for the reduction in the grip level of the tyres.

Honda: New Laguna Raceway Sponsor

MONTEREY, California (February 27, 1998) -- Honda is the new Official Automobile and Motorcycle of Laguna Seca Raceway, and Honda will title sponsor two major events at America's premier road racing track, the Honda
Challenge of Laguna Seca and the Honda Grand Prix of Monterey. As well, Honda will be the presenting sponsor of the VISA Sports Car Championships.

These are the key elements of a three year sponsorship agreement jointly announced today by John Stornetta, General Manager of Laguna Seca Raceway for the Sports Car Racing Association of the Monterey Peninsula (SCRAMP), and Tom Elliott, Executive Vice President of American Honda Motor Co.

"We could not be more pleased to have Honda as our partner for our efforts to increase the positive impact of events on the community," said Stornetta. "It's a natural match. Honda has a winning heritage and is a leader in both the automobile, motorcycle and racing industries. Just like SCRAMP produces exciting, world-class events at Laguna Seca Raceway, Honda produces outstanding, exciting automobile and motorcycles. We look forward to a successful long-term relationship leading into the next millennium."

"Laguna Seca Raceway is a world class facility with a first class heritage," said Elliott. "This is Honda's first expansion into name and title sponsorship, and partnering with Laguna Seca Raceway makes eminent sense. Honda is a company rooted in racing and built on a foundation of quality, innovation, and customer service: all premier qualities shared
with the Laguna Seca Raceway family. As Honda celebrates its 50th anniversary, we can't think of a better pairing of values, history and vision for the future."

The Honda Challenge of Laguna Seca on the weekend of April 17-19 features the third round of the 1998 MBNA Superbike Championship and other races of the MBNA Superbike Tour organized by the America Motorcycle Association (AMA).

The 1998 Honda Grand Prix of Monterey featuring the Texaco/Havoline 300 round of the FedEx Championship Series for CART (Championship Auto Racing Teams) Champ Car (formerly IndyCar) teams is scheduled for the weekend of
September 11-13.

The VISA Sports Car Championships presented by Honda is on the weekend of October 23-25, 1998.

Honda engines powered the winners of six out of 17 series race winners in 1997. In 1996, Honda won its first CART Manufacturers Championship with 11 victories in 16 races, including six 1-2 finishes. Honda madde its Champ Car racing debut in 1995 when its first CART series race and pole wins were scored.

Honda is also the reigning manufacturers champion of both the AMA and World Superbike championships.

Prior to the agreement with Honda, Toyota was the official vehicle and title sponsor of the AMA Superbike and Monterey Grand Prix events. "Laguna Seca Raceway and Toyota enjoyed a great working relationship for many
years," said Stornetta. "They were an outstanding sponsor and we wish them continued success in developing their racing program."

Laguna Seca Raceway has been operated by the Sports Car Racing Association of the Monterey Peninsula since its opening in 1957. SCRAMP is a non-profit organization chartered to "benefit local charitable and non-profit
organizations and to promote the economic vitality of Monterey..." Over 40 years, SCRAMP has distributed more than $8 million for youth programs and community service projects organized by groups which, in turn, provide volunteer workers for events. In addition, more than $1 billion in revenue has been generated by Laguna Seca race events for businesses on the Monterey Peninsula and in surrounding communities.

Product Reviewed: Field SFC-VTEC Controller

This past week I was busy installing and reviewing Field's SFC-VTEC controller in my '97 Prelude. The posted review has most of the important information (such as dyno plots and analysis, etc.) but I still have some installation photos and information to be posted when I get the chance. Keep in mind that while this product was fairly effective on the H22A4 motor, it may not be as beneficial to some of the other VTEC motors, because some are already tuned with the optimal VTEC transition point.

BestCar's latest: FR Sedan

Retouched by Neal McDaniel Retouched by Neal McDaniel

Above is BestCar's depiction of Honda's upcoming 3-series fighter. I see a few hints of the Japanese market Accord (C-pillar) and a Civic-like front clip, with taillights that are somewhat distinctive from the rest of the Honda lineup. This car will be somewhat compact in dimensions, but should boast more interior room than it's European competition. Personally I hope the front overhang remains relatively short as shown (even a bit shorter wouldn't be bad), and I would also like to see grille area shrink somewhat as well.

2.9.98

A quick note about the '98 Integra Type R

In several of the earlier news updates I have been referring to the newly revised '98 Integra Type R as the "Integra Type R•II" even though it's not officially named as such. It has been brought to my attention that this is incorrect and/or improper and potentially confusing, as the "II" designation has significance within the Honda lineup (SiR vs SiR•II). I would like to apologize in advance if any confusion was caused by this oversight on my behalf. I don't recall exactly where I picked up on the "Type R•II" label, but I have been using it merely to distinguish the '98 Integra Type R from the '96-'97 models. I went back and changed some of the previous references to "Type R•II" on this page. jkp

What some dealers are saying...

From Alex Sack

1)  I called up some dealer(s) looking for an Integra Type R and to ask
about the SSM.  Here is what they told me...Honda has OFFICIALLY told
them that the Integra line will be discontinued after '99 and that it
will be replaced by another Acura car, not the SSM.  They said they have
proof via a document sent to all the dealers notifiying them of this
news (in other words try to sell as many Integras as possible because
you're not going getting any more after '99.

2)  THE FOLLOWING IS NOT FACT BUT MANY DEALERS OPINIONS
AND WHAT THEY HAVE HEARD:

I was told by three dealerships around the NJ area that the SSM will
replace the Acura NSX.  They told me that they know for a fact that we
won't be seening the SSM until Spring of 99 the earliest and that it
will be an ACURA.  Also, he said it is very unclear if the reported
redesign of the NSX for the year 2000 will take place.

TOV's Take on the above items:
As to item 1, I don't think there's any need to panic. It's a known fact that Acura intended all along to do away with the Integra name so it's lineup could be fully alphanumeric. The replacement for the Integra in the Acura lineup will likely still be called "Integra" in other markets. Addressing item 2, I personally doubt that the NSX will be canned in favor of the SSM. The SSM is going to be one hell of a car, but I think it will definitely be significantly downmarket from the NSX. On top of that, I keep hearing (though no official confirmation yet) that the SSM will be sold in Honda dealerships in the U.S., not Acura. I personally think it would be a mistake if this happened, as Honda's retail numbers are pretty good, while Acura's showrooms could certainly use a bit of excitement.

Honda news from abroad, part 2

Thanks to Robinho

In the Netherlands, Honda started 1998 with some anniversary models
based on the Accord and Civic, called JEWEL. the Accord Jewel is fitted
with 5 spoke aluminium wheels, cruise control, airconditioning. It seems
that in Belgium Honda launched models based on comicbook, Michel
Vaillante, written by the French Jean Graton. This comicbook is all about
racing and very realistic. The colors of these models are bleu and wear
the comicbooks logo.
CR-V sales are doing pretty well here. Honda's Turbodiesel powered

Civic Type R reviewed in 3.98 Sport Compact Car

Most of the information in the article is pretty straight forward, no groundbreaking news about the Japanese Civic R, but they did mention something about the possibility of a Type R Civic coming to the US. Basically they said that Honda of Japan categorically stated that there would be no Type R for the US, but sources from within American Honda are saying that there will be a Civic Type R for the US. It's interesting that this story keeps popping up because I had personally heard from some people that would know about such things last April that a US Type R/Si-R program existed, but they would not divulge any details as far as engine specs, or delivery time frame, though it was somewhat hinted that we may see something in '98. I was sort of waiting for some sort of confirmation in the automotive press before categorically stating that there would in fact be a Type R/Si-R Civic in our marketplace. What does seem to be certain, however, is that that there will be a Civic Si coupe, with about 145hp, according to this month's SCC. The Si seems to be much more of a certainty, with SCC stating that it's pretty much been verified by Honda of Japan.

Damon Hill and Ralf Schumacher in the fight for the 1998 Formula One World
Championship.  In a spectacular show at the Royal Albert Hall, incorporating a
20 minute excerpt from Cirque du Soleil's new show Alegria, the Benson and
Hedges Jordan Mugen-Honda 198 descended from 50 feet above an audience of 600
sponsor and media guests to reveal its spectacular new livery and design.

Jordan Mugen-Honda 198

Benson and Hedges team owner, Eddie Jordan, heralded the dramatic introduction
of the Jordan Mugen-Honda as the opening shots of what promises to be the most
open Formula One season of recent years.  "With the most radical rule changes
for 15 years nobody can predict what will happen," said Jordan.  "But we have
made a big investment in time and people to meet this challenge, and we are
determined to make it a success.  Last year we showed we were on the right
track, and the addition this year of 21 times Grand Prix winner and 1996 World
Champion Damon Hill, plus the brand new purpose built Mugen-Honda engine, will
complete or jigsaw."

The Jordan Mugen-Honda 198, designed by Technical Director Gary Anderson and
his team of engineers, evolved from the narrow track Jordan car which proved
very successful in tests last autumn.  It completed a successful shakedown on
Friday 16th January on the National Circuit at Silverstone.  Ralf Schumacher,
Jordan's 22 year old German driver, who drove the car for its first laps
declared, "It felt great, even better than last year's car."  Watching Ralf's
first run, Jordan's new driver Damon Hill, who will drive the car in Barcelona
on Wednesday 21st, said "The car has done everything we asked of it today, so
this is an excellent start."

Also present on Friday was Spain's Pedro de la Rosa, who in 1997 succeeded
Ralf as Japanese Formula Nippon Champion (Japan's equivalent F3000), and who
was confirmed on Monday as Benson and Hedges Jordan's test and reserve driver
for the 1998 season.  In addition, Yeuchi Wakisaka, was confirmed by Mr.
Hirotoshi Honda, President of Mugen Co Ltd, as the first participant of the
Mugen-Honda scholarship scheme which will result in a testing programme with
Jordan Grand Prix.

L-R: test driver Pedro de la Rosa, Ralf Schumacher (in cap), and Damon Hill

In his first drive in a Formula One car for four months, Damon Hill took to
the wheel of his Benson and Hedges Jordan Mugen-Honda 198 under sunny skies in
Barcelona, Spain.  "It was a big thrill," said Hill.  "It felt great to be
back in the driving seat, and my new car felt fantastic.  It is wonderful to
feel the adrenalin pumping again after such a long break."

The Jordan Mugen-Honda 198 was flown out to Barcelona on Tuesday morning after
its dramatic launch at the Royal Albert Hall on Monday 19th.  Despite flight
delays, Damon the the Jordan team managed to complete 12 laps late on Tuesday
afternoon.  "I must admit to feeling a little nervous when I first stepped
into the car," said Hill.  "Many of the features of the new car are different
to those I am used to, such as the control systems for example, and I was
anxious to see how it would feel after so many months away.  But after two
laps you are fully back into it.  Because of the regulation changes, the car
has less grip than last year, but it is still fantastic to drive.  When I got
out of the car yesterday I had a huge grin on my face.  Today (Wednesday 21st)
we are into serious testing, but we have not had any major problems which is
no mean feat for a completely new car.  I am impressed by how the team is
working, and my relationship with everyone is gelling very nicely."

Damon will continue to test tomorrow, and his team mate Ralf Schumacher will
test Friday and Saturday. (23rd and 24th)

Japanese Magazine Update - '98 Type R info

Thanks to TOV/Asia's WongKN

'98 Type R bows
The February 10 edition of BestCar magazine is reporting that the final specifications for the revised Type R, which was reportedly released on or about January 20 in Japan, have changed slightly from the speculated numbers. The final horsepower number will apparently stand at 200ps, but the torque has increased to 19.0kg-m (~137 lb-ft), at only 6200 rpms. This is 1300 rpms lower than the current torque peak (18.5 kg-m @ 7500 rpms), which should substantially improve acceleration.

More SSX confusion
In a suprising report, BestCar is now stating that the SSX (due for Japanese release in August) will come with a choice of either a 2.5L V6 or a 3.0L V6 motor. The 2.5L will reportedly be offered in LEV or "power" forms. The LEV is reportedly rated at 145ps, while the "power" version will twist 200ps. The 3.0L will reportedly sport DOHC VTEC and a 250ps output. It appears that Honda may be intentionally floating numerous stories to keep us all guessing...

CRX info
There is a picture of the new CR-X (hopefully I will get it posted here soon) and BestCar is still reporting that it will be out sometime next year. It still appears that it will retain the 1.0L DOHC VTEC I-3 motor with the Integrated Motor Assist (IMA), and also offer a 1.5L. The 1.0L is rated to produce 30km of travel per liter of fuel (almost 71 mpg). Details of the 1.5L's output are not yet known.

 Accord Type R Update
In this edition of BestCar, another short description of the Accord Type R is given, as well as a few photos of it's 2.0L motor, which should be rated at 220ps when it comes out.

SSX, Civic, and Accord News from the Sydney Herald

...An all-aluminium body ensures the SSM will be ultra-light; its
power-to-weight ratio will be impressive.

According to spy shots in the Japanese specialist car magazine, Mag X,
the engine is mounted almost amidships. This race car-inspired design
should translate to nimble handling on the road.

A built-in roll bar, dual airbags and anti-skid brakes will be standard.
The wheels and brakes are shared with the Prelude.

Inside, the dashboard looks broad and bland but features a futuristic
digital computer screen speedometer and tachometer display similar to
that of the four-wheeled star of the American TV show, KnightRider. The
same screen is also the display for satellite navigation maps and
directions.

Keen to create a car as well-rounded as the Mazda MX-5, Honda's
no-expense-spared development program includes exhaustive testing in
Japan and Europe. Honda engineers are already testing the car in its
final form on German roads and race tracks.

About 12 months after the SSM's release, the two-seater Civic roadster -
the replacement for the CRX - will spearhead Honda's value attack.

Designed in the MX-5 mould, the Civic roadster is expected to be
significantly cheaper, although smaller, than its current CRX coupe but
will be powered by the same 1.6-litre variable valve timing engine.

A roofless four-seater two-door Accord, based on the floorpan of the
sedan imported from the US, will complete the trio in 2000.

That which lurks beneath the bonnet of the SSX....

From 2.98 MagX

The above photos reveal a few interesting things. First of all, the majority of the motor appears to be set fairly far back, almost behind the front axle line, obviously for improved weight bias. Honda must have designed a fairly stiff chassis from the offset, as there is no strut tower brace present. Looking at the close-up, it appears as though the motor in the test mule has direct ignition. Will this see production? Also, the intake airbox looks rather production-quality for a test mule, and rather complex, judging by it's size. It's surprising to see the heat shield over the exhaust manifold as well, but maybe not so surprising is the fact that this prototype car has a better underhood appearance than most manufacturer's production vehicles (you should see the mess of hoses and wiring under the hood of my '96 4Runner).

TL, Japanese Accord Type R

BestCar's TL photo

Accord Type R?

I think the "photos" above are another installment of BestCar's doctored specialties, so don't get too excited just yet. The "photo" of the TL looks to be the same "photo" that they've published before, only this time it's in color. Several months before the '98 Accords hit the roads, this photo was used to depict what the Accords would look like, only when I saw it then it was in black and white (see the archives). The Accord Type R depicted in the second "photo" does look rather aggressive though, maybe a little too Mitsubishiesque, though. In other news, I read in the February Automobile magazine that Honda's Accord Cabriolet will likely be offered with two motors - a 2.0L 150hp I-4, and a 2.2L 220hp DOHC VTEC I-4. Apparently, these motors are for the international market, because Automobile also commented that they weren't exactly sure if the car would make it to the US. If my issue ever comes in the mail I'll scan the drawing and post it here.

A bit of TL-X info

I had hoped to have a bit more info on Acura's new TL-X, but Honda's PR machine being what it is, neither concept was even mentioned on CNN's special that covered the NAIAS. There was a brief flash of footage of the minivan concept being rolled out, but other than that, nada. If you look on the Detroit News web page they have some info and photos, but not much beyond the Acura press release. Basically, what I've been able to obtain is pretty much the obvious stuff: slightly better than dull styling, another FWD platform, maybe a navigation system or something, yawn, etc... It is said that this concept car appears "production-ready" in current form, though.

Minivan Concept debuts at NAIAS

Charles V. Tines / The Detroit News

Nicknamed the MV-99, Honda's "thinly disguised" prototype for the as-yet-unnamed '99 minivan debuted in Detroit on Monday. Taking a new approach into the hotly contested minivan market, Honda hopes to at least double the best sales year of the Odyssey (30,000 units). Honda is confident that the new minivan's V6 engine, plus the industry-first standard dual power sliding rear doors will help it achieve this objective.

According to Dick Colliver, executive Vice President of Honda, "This will be the largest vehicle Honda has ever made." "It will be as big, as roomy, as powerful, as versatile and as competitively priced as anything in the market." The concept vehicle, at 196 inches, is just a few inches short of Chrysler's Grand Caravan (199.6 inches). The production version, to be built in Alliston, Ontario, is said to be slightly longer than the concept vehicle.
